Where to Stay in Cascais and Sintra: Romantic Luxury Hotels by the Ocean and in the Hills

Venues & Destinations·Cascais & Sintra, Portugal
Venues & Destinations

Where I send couples to stay on my own coast: an eighteenth-century palace in Sintra, a monastery in the hills, a fortress above Guincho and villas on the cliffs, plus a few hideaways a little further along the ocean.

Cascais & Sintra, Portugal·Venues & Destinations

I live in Cascais, ten minutes from Guincho, and this coast is home. Between the Sintra hills and the ocean there are palaces in the forest, a fortress on the rocks and old villas where kings spent their summers, and so many of my proposals, elopements and weddings begin in one of their rooms.

That's why couples ask me where to stay almost before they ask about anything else. And it matters: the hotel is where your day starts. The dress waits by a tall window, someone opens the champagne, and the light comes in from the garden or the sea. Then, a few minutes later, we're on the dunes at Guincho, in the gardens of Seteais or on the cliffs above Praia da Ursa.

So here is the list I send. Hotels for a honeymoon, a proposal, an elopement or a wedding with everyone you love, in Sintra, on the Cascais coast, and a little further along the ocean.

All the hotels in this guide are on my Google map of romantic hotels, with their addresses and websites. Open it on your phone and save it before you go.

Palaces in the Sintra hills

Valverde Sintra Palácio de Seteais, Sintra

If I could choose only one hotel on this coast, it would be this one. Seteais is a neoclassical palace from the end of the eighteenth century, two white wings joined by a triumphal arch, with gardens that fall away towards the valley and the ocean on the horizon. Its name means "seven sighs", and there's a legend about the echo for every one of them. It has only thirty rooms; ask for the Royal Suite in the historic wing, with a balcony over the pool and the gardens, or a Signature Suite that looks across the valley to the Atlantic. I've photographed proposals and weddings here, and you can read the story of a surprise proposal in its gardens. The palace sets a private table for two in one of its quiet corners, or a picnic in the gardens, and for a wedding you can have the whole palace and all its rooms to yourselves until noon the next day.

Penha Longa Resort, Sintra

The only hotel inside the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, built around a fourteenth-century monastery with a little Renaissance chapel, pink cloisters, blue tiles and green hills all around. I've photographed a wedding and a proposal here, and the cloisters glow at dusk. It's one of only two hotels in Portugal with three Michelin Keys, the guide's highest honour for hotels, and two of its restaurants, LAB by Sergi Arola and Midori, have a Michelin star each. It's a big resort with a golf course and families around the pool, so ask for a Signature Suite with a balcony over the park. For a wedding, you can say your vows in the chapel and dance in the old monastery's halls.

Lawrence's Hotel, Sintra

A small hotel in the old town of Sintra that has been welcoming guests since 1764 and calls itself the oldest hotel on the Iberian Peninsula. Lord Byron stayed here, and Eça de Queiroz set a dinner from his novel The Maias in its dining room. Its sixteen rooms have names instead of numbers and real keys instead of cards, some have a fireplace, and the Forest Terrace looks over the wooded valley. It feels like an English country house, and it's the place for a winter honeymoon with tea by the fire and the palaces a short drive away.

On the edge of the Atlantic

Fortaleza do Guincho, Guincho

A seventeenth-century fortress at the very edge of the ocean, with cannons at the door, waves breaking on the rocks below and Guincho beach right beside it. It has only twenty-seven rooms, with vaulted brick ceilings and carved beds; ask for a Junior Suite with a balcony facing the sea. Its restaurant has held a Michelin star for more than twenty years, and the hotel has a romantic package with a tasting dinner. For a wedding, the medieval hall seats up to a hundred and twenty, and ceremonies happen on the terrace above the sea. The Guincho dunes, where I photograph so many couples, are a few steps from your door.

Farol Hotel, Cascais

A nineteenth-century mansion on the rocks right beside the Santa Marta lighthouse, a short walk from the old town. The waves break almost at the terraces, the rooms were styled by different designers, and the Junior Suites have glass fronts or balconies with a hundred and eighty degrees of ocean. There's a pool facing the sea, a deck on the rocks for sunset drinks, and a glass-fronted space on the water for a big celebration. For a proposal at sunset, with the lighthouse next to you, it's hard to beat.

The Albatroz, Cascais

The summer palace of the Dukes of Loulé, built in 1873 on a rocky headland above the bay, right in the old town of Cascais. The hotel spreads over three historic buildings, with a pool and a terrace hanging over the water and a bar where the whole bay turns gold at sunset. Ask for a Sea View Suite, or the duplex at the top of the White House, which has the widest view of all. It doesn't host weddings, but a proposal on the terrace and dinner by the window is a very Cascais evening, and the hotel even has a yacht for a sail along the coast.

Grande Real Villa Itália, Cascais

Umberto II, the last King of Italy, spent his years of exile in Cascais, and this hotel was built from his houses on the cliff above the sea. It's large, but the romance is real: a seawater pool at the edge of the rocks, a spa inspired by Roman baths, and penthouses with a jacuzzi and a terrace with its own little pool over the Atlantic. For a wedding, you can say your vows by the pool with the ocean behind you, and the old town is a five-minute walk along the sea.

Grand old Estoril and the citadel

Palácio Estoril, Estoril

A grand hotel from 1930, where the royal families of Europe waited out their exile and Grace Kelly and Orson Welles came to stay. It has a long white facade over the pool, marble salons with chandeliers, and a Banyan Tree spa. It suits a classic wedding beautifully: an imperial room for sixty that opens onto a terrace, a palace ballroom for a hundred, and a bigger hall for four hundred. The casino gardens, the beach and the promenade to Cascais are at the door.

Address: Rua Particular, Estoril. Website · Google Maps

Pestana Cidadela Cascais, Cascais

A hotel inside the walls of the old citadel, between the marina and the old town, with artists' studios and galleries in its courtyards and a pool in the fortress gardens. It's less intimate than the others on this list, but the location is wonderful, and the gothic cistern and the gardens make a lovely setting for a welcome dinner. Ask for a room with a sea view.

A little further along the coast

Immerso, Ericeira

Forty minutes north of Lisbon, near the surf village of Ericeira, low wooden suites with glass fronts sit in a valley of pines and lemon trees looking out to the Atlantic. It's the first five-star hotel in Ericeira, and its suites have a balcony with a swing. There's a spa, sunrise and sunset yoga, and the hotel can be yours alone for a wedding. It's the place I'd suggest for couples who want the ocean and quiet more than marble and chandeliers.

Address: Rua Bica da Figueira, Santo Isidoro, Ericeira. Website · Google Maps

Areias do Seixo, Santa Cruz

About an hour north of Cascais, among pines and dunes above a wild beach, this is one of the most romantic hideaways on the whole coast. The Love Suites have fireplaces, a jacuzzi and a private terrace over the dunes and the sea, and there's even a tent with a wood stove for a night under canvas. They'll serve a candlelit dinner for two in your room, and they have their own elopement offer, so you can marry among the dunes and sleep a few steps away.

Pousada Castelo de Óbidos, Óbidos

A night inside a castle that King Dinis gave to Queen Isabel as a wedding present. The Pousada sits within the walls of medieval Óbidos, with stone walls, four-poster beds and painted ceilings, and once the day visitors leave, the white lanes and the walls are yours. I've photographed weddings near here, at Quinta do Gradil, and an elopement at Praia del Rey, and at golden hour the walls of Óbidos turn the colour of honey.

For a wedding with all your guests

For the whole celebration in one place, Seteais is my first choice: the entire palace, every room and the gardens, just for you and your guests. Penha Longa has its chapel and the monastery halls, Fortaleza do Guincho its medieval hall above the sea for up to a hundred and twenty, and Palácio Estoril its ballrooms. Grande Real Villa Itália sets ceremonies by the pool with the ocean behind, and Immerso can close the whole hotel for you.

For an elopement, I love Areias do Seixo, the Seteais gardens, the terrace of Fortaleza do Guincho and the chapel at Penha Longa. And if you're planning the wedding itself, my Cascais wedding guide has the venues, the light and the logistics of this coast.

What I look for in a room

The rooms that photograph beautifully have big windows, soft daylight and a little space, and on this coast, the light from the sea is a gift. If you can, book a suite for the morning of your elopement or wedding, ask for late check-out, and let the hotel know a photographer is coming. Then think about where we'll go next: from Seteais we walk into its gardens, from Fortaleza do Guincho onto the dunes, from Farol to the lighthouse, and from Penha Longa it's fifteen minutes to the cliffs of Ursa.

A few things I tell every couple

Guincho is windy on most days, so bring a jacket or a shawl even in summer and plan the ceremony on the sheltered side. Sintra is often cooler and mistier than Cascais, which fills its gardens with mist and soft light but means the beach can be sunny when the hills are grey. In summer the sun sets around 21:00; my best time to get married in Portugal guide has the rest of the year. Sintra's lanes are narrow and parking is hard, so a driver makes the day much easier. And if you've read about The Oitavos in older guides, it has closed and is being rebuilt as a new hotel.

When you've chosen your hotel, here are my favourite romantic restaurants in Cascais and Sintra, and the places to take photos: Sintra, Praia da Ursa and Monserrate. Staying in the city too? Here are the hotels I love in Lisbon, and further south, the Algarve.

Your story starts in your room

This is how I love to photograph a day on my coast: we start in your room, with the windows open to the garden or the sea, then walk out into the palace gardens or drive ten minutes to the dunes and the cliffs while the light turns gold. A proposal works the same way: one of you asks on the terrace or in the cloister, I'm hiding nearby, and we take the photos while everything is still trembling.

Proposal and couple sessions begin at €600 for two hours, elopement collections at €1,200 and weddings at €2,900, and there's no travel fee anywhere around Cascais and Sintra. Have a look at my proposal sessions, elopements and weddings, or write to me with your dates and the hotel you've fallen for, and I'll plan the light around it.
