Where to Stay in the Algarve: Romantic Luxury Hotels on the Cliffs for a Honeymoon or an Elopement
From the wild cliffs of Sagres to the lagoons of Tavira: the Algarve hotels I recommend for a honeymoon, a proposal, an elopement or a wedding, a few I've stayed in myself, and a detour to Comporta.
The Algarve has a light I've never seen anywhere else. Golden cliffs that turn almost orange at sunset, turquoise coves hidden below them, white chapels on the rocks, and a sea so clear you can count the pebbles. I've photographed elopements here among the cliffs, and every time I drive back to Cascais with sand in my shoes and the feeling that I've been somewhere far away.
When couples plan a proposal, an elopement or a honeymoon in the south, the first thing they ask me is where to stay. And it shapes the whole day: the hotel is where we begin, with the dress by the window and the sea outside, and it decides which cliffs and beaches are a few minutes away when the light turns gold.
So here is my list, from the wild west coast near Sagres to the quiet lagoons of the east, with a little detour to Comporta on the way down from Lisbon.
All the hotels in this guide are on my Google map of romantic hotels, with their addresses and websites. Open it on your phone and save it before you go.

The wild west: Sagres and Lagos
Memmo Baleeira, Sagres
At the very end of Europe, above the little harbour of Sagres, a white design hotel looks out over the bay and the Atlantic. The suite to ask for has a private terrace with a soaking tub and a fireplace facing the ocean, and there's a sunken fire pit for the evenings. The cliffs and the lighthouse of Cabo de São Vicente, the wildest place I know for an elopement, are ten minutes away. It's windy at this corner of Portugal even in summer, so bring something warm for the sunset.

Casa Mãe, Lagos
An old family estate right beside the ochre walls of Lagos, with a white nineteenth-century house, a pool framed by the town walls and a kitchen garden that feeds the restaurant. The cabanas have a private patio with a hammock and an outdoor shower, and Villa Paiol, with its own rooftop pool, sleeps six: just right for an elopement with your closest people. The old town is at the door, and the grottoes of Ponta da Piedade and Praia do Camilo are a few minutes away.

The golden cliffs: from Portimão to Albufeira
Bela Vista Hotel & Spa, Praia da Rocha
A summer palace from 1918, neo-Manueline and full of its original blue tiles, standing on the cliff above Praia da Rocha. It's a Relais & Châteaux hotel with a grown-up, quiet feeling, and the hotel itself says it isn't made for children. Ask for a Junior Suite with a sea view, in the old palace or in the blue house beside it. Its restaurant, Vista, has a Michelin star and a dining room with the ocean in every window.
Address: Avenida Tomás Cabreira, Praia da Rocha, Portimão. Website · Google Maps

Tivoli Carvoeiro, Carvoeiro
A big resort on the cliffs of Vale Covo, so it's not a hideaway, but the setting is spectacular: ochre rocks, the sea below and sunsets from the rooftop bar. Ask for the Jacuzzi Suite, with a jacuzzi on the terrace facing the ocean. Weddings happen in its gardens on the cliff top, and the hotel will even set a picnic for two on the cliffs. The boardwalks of Algar Seco are a short walk away, and the Benagil cave a few minutes by car.

Vila Vita Parc, Porches
If you want the most complete luxury in the Algarve, this is it, and I've stayed here myself: an estate on the cliffs with gardens running down to its own coves, one of only two hotels in Portugal with three Michelin Keys. Ocean, its restaurant, has two Michelin stars. The room to ask for is the Oasis Suite with a private rooftop terrace, a rain shower and daybeds under the sky, and for a whole party there are private villas. Vila Vita Parc has its own wedding team, from a ceremony for two to a big celebration. The white chapel of Nossa Senhora da Rocha and the sea arch of Albandeira, where I photographed an elopement in May, are ten minutes away.
Address: Rua Anneliese Pohl, Alporchinhos, Porches. Website · Google Maps

Vila Joya, Praia da Galé
A small white house above Praia da Galé with only about twenty rooms, every one with a view of the sea, and a restaurant that has held two Michelin stars for decades. Dinner on the candlelit terrace as the sun goes down is the reason people come back year after year. The Master Royal Suite is the only room with its own garden and heated pool. It's not a wedding hotel, but for a honeymoon or a proposal dinner it's as romantic as the Algarve gets.

Pine Cliffs, Praia da Falésia
A large resort among stone pines above the red and white cliffs of Falésia. I've stayed here myself: it's loved by families, so for me it's a wedding venue first and a quiet honeymoon second. And what a wedding venue: a champagne bar on the edge of the cliff under a single pine, a secluded garden among the pines for the ceremony, and a sunset deck facing the Atlantic. Steps lead down to one of the longest and most beautiful beaches in the Algarve.

EPIC SANA Algarve, Praia da Falésia
Next door to Pine Cliffs, among the same pines above Falésia, and another hotel I've stayed in myself. It's modern and generous rather than intimate, with five pools, a spa and four restaurants. Ask for a Deluxe Suite with an ocean view: the balconies are huge and look over the pine forest to the Atlantic. A wooden boardwalk winds down through the red cliffs to the beach, and early in the morning, before anyone else is there, it's one of the most beautiful walks to the sea I know.

Pines, a palace and the lagoon: around Faro
Conrad Algarve, Quinta do Lago
Among the pines of Quinta do Lago, on the edge of the Ria Formosa lagoon, this is the polished, glamorous Algarve, and I've stayed here too. Every room has a balcony over the pines and the gardens rather than the sea, and the Roof Garden Suite has a pool inside the living room and its own rooftop terrace. Gusto by Heinz Beck, its restaurant, has a Michelin star, and the boardwalks and wooden bridge to the beach are a lovely place for a sunset walk.
Address: Estrada da Quinta do Lago, Almancil. Website · Google Maps
Pousada Palácio de Estoi, Estoi
The only palace hotel in the Algarve, a pink rococo palace from the eighteenth century in a village fifteen minutes from Faro, with gardens inspired by Versailles, statues, tiled walls and its own little chapel. I photographed a bridal editorial in this palace, and I still think of its salons, with painted ceilings full of cherubs and gilded mirrors. The pool looks out to the sea and the hills. It's a beautiful place for a wedding: ceremonies in the chapel or the village church, dinner in the gardens for up to a hundred and seventy, and smaller halls for fifty.

The quiet east
Octant Vila Monte, Moncarapacho
A whitewashed farmhouse in the countryside east of Faro, among orange trees and olive groves, made for slowing down. The Master Pool Suite, for adults only, has a heated plunge pool of its own between the sun deck and the garden. The beaches are twenty minutes away, and the boats to the islands of the Ria Formosa leave from Olhão.
Address: Sítio dos Caliços, Moncarapacho. Website · Google Maps
Octant Praia Verde, Castro Marim
Its sister hotel lies low among stone pines near a long, quiet beach in the far east of the Algarve, where the sea is calmer and warmer. Ask for the Pool Master Suite, with a private plunge pool and a view of the sea, and book the sunset picnic on the beach. Cacela Velha, the prettiest village on this coast, is fifteen minutes away.
Address: Praia Verde, Altura, Castro Marim. Website · Google Maps

Palácio de Tavira, Tavira
The newest hotel on this list opened in 2025 in an old family palace in the middle of Tavira, with a new wing of Moorish courtyards and a plunge pool on the roof above the old town. The Palácio Suite has a veranda of its own. Step out of the door and you're at the Roman bridge over the river, among the churches and the castle gardens, the most romantic little town in the Algarve for an evening walk.

On the way south: Comporta
If you're driving down from Lisbon, Comporta is a wonderful place to stop for a night or two: rice fields, endless beaches, stilt piers and a very barefoot kind of luxury.
Sublime Comporta, Comporta
Sixty-eight hectares of umbrella pines, cork oaks and dunes, with timber cabanas that glow at dusk and reflect in the ponds. The Cabana Suites have a private pool and fireplaces, the Spa Suite has a jacuzzi of its own, and the larger villas take a whole party. The hotel hosts weddings too.
Address: EN 261-1, Muda, Comporta. Website · Google Maps
Quinta da Comporta, Carvalhal
A long infinity pool that faces the rice fields and turns pink at sunset, suites with fireplaces and balconies over the fields, a spa named after rice and a restaurant on the spot where it was once stored. The Carrasqueira stilt pier, one of my favourite places in Portugal at sunset, is ten minutes away.
Address: Rua Alto do Pina 2, Carvalhal, Grândola. Website · Google Maps

For a wedding with all your guests
For the whole celebration in one place, Vila Vita Parc has its own wedding team, gardens on the cliffs and villas for your family. Pine Cliffs has the most romantic cliff-top garden for a ceremony and a champagne bar on the edge for the drinks after, and Tivoli Carvoeiro sets ceremonies on its lawn above the sea. For a palace wedding, the Pousada Palácio de Estoi has its chapel and its gardens for up to a hundred and seventy. The small hotels, Vila Joya, Casa Mãe, the Octant houses, are the ones I'd choose for an elopement, with the ceremony on a cliff or a beach nearby.
Where I take couples in the Algarve
Between Lagos and Albufeira, the coast is one golden cliff after another: the grottoes of Ponta da Piedade, the wooden stairs down to Praia do Camilo, the arch of Albandeira, Praia da Marinha and the white chapel of Nossa Senhora da Rocha on its rock above the sea. For a quieter, softer mood, the dunes and lagoons of the east, Cacela Velha and the island beaches of the Ria Formosa.

A few things I tell every couple
The Algarve is about three hours' drive from Lisbon, and Faro has its own airport. In July and August the famous beaches fill up, so for photos we go early in the morning or at the very end of the day, and May, June, September and October are my favourite months here. The light is softest in the first hour after sunrise and the last before sunset; in summer the sun sets around 20:45, and my best time to get married in Portugal guide has the rest of the year. The west, around Sagres, is wild and windy, while the east is calmer and warmer.
For the rest of Portugal, here are the hotels I love in Lisbon and in Cascais and Sintra, and my guide to eloping in Portugal.
Your story starts in your room
This is how I love to photograph an elopement in the south: we start in your room with the sea outside the window, then drive a few minutes to the cliffs and the coves while the rocks turn gold. A proposal works the same way: one of you asks on the cliff or the hotel terrace, I'm hiding nearby, and we take the photos while everything is still trembling.

Proposal and couple sessions begin at €600 for two hours, elopement collections at €1,200 and weddings at €2,900. For the Algarve there's a flat travel fee from €400. Have a look at my proposal sessions, elopements and weddings, or write to me with your dates and the hotel you love, and I'll find the cliffs and the light to go with it.
