Romantic Restaurants in Cascais, Sintra and on the Beaches near Lisbon
Where I send couples after a sunset session on my own coast: a fortress above Guincho, a palace in Sintra, glass rooms over the sea and barefoot beach bars, for two or for your whole party.
I live in Cascais, ten minutes from Guincho, and this stretch of coast between Cascais and Sintra is where so many of my sessions end: on the dunes, on the cliffs above Praia da Ursa, in the palace gardens of Sintra. The light goes, the wind softens a little, and while I'm putting my camera away the couple asks me the question I hear after almost every session: "Where should we have dinner tonight?"
Here, the answer is usually the ocean. A fortress on the cliffs, a palace dining room, a glass room hanging over a natural pool, a beach shack that has grilled fish for more than a century. This is the list I give couples, whether it's a date on your honeymoon, the dinner after a proposal or an elopement, or the welcome dinner the night before your wedding with everyone you love around one long table.
All the places in this guide are on my Google map of romantic restaurants, with their hours, websites and directions. Open it on your phone and save it before you go.

A fortress, a palace and the finest tables
Fortaleza do Guincho, Guincho
A seventeenth-century fortress on the very edge of the Atlantic, with the waves of Guincho crashing below and Cabo da Roca on the horizon. Fortaleza do Guincho has held a Michelin star for twenty-five years, and its tasting menu is all about the ocean outside the window. The restaurant serves dinner from Wednesday to Saturday only, so book three or four weeks ahead for a Saturday. From October to March it's dark by dinnertime, so come early and have a glass on the terrace while the sun goes down.
Hours: Wednesday to Saturday, dinner 19:00–21:30. Website · Google Maps
Marialva at the Valverde Palácio de Seteais, Sintra
The neoclassical palace you may know from my Seteais proposal story is now the Valverde Palácio de Seteais, and its Marialva restaurant is the most romantic dining room in Sintra: gilded walls, painted panels, long curtains and tall windows onto the park. The palace also arranges a private table for two in one of its quieter corners, and a picnic in the gardens for a long summer afternoon. If you're planning a proposal, this is the place to ask about. Book two or three weeks ahead on the palace's website.
Hours: lunch 12:30–15:00 and dinner 19:30–22:00. Website · Google Maps

Midori, Penha Longa, Sintra
In the Penha Longa resort, at the foot of the Sintra hills, Midori holds a Michelin star for its Japanese cooking with Portuguese produce. The room has an open kitchen, wave-patterned walls and a hand-painted mural of the Portuguese sailors who reached Japan in 1543, and its glass wall looks onto the gardens. The tasting menus are €158 and €192 a person. In the same resort, LAB by Sergi Arola holds a star too.
Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, dinner 19:00–22:30. Website · Google Maps

Kappo, Cascais
The newest star on the coast. Kappo is a counter of twelve seats where the chef cuts, grills and serves each course right in front of you, with a menu that changes four times a year and uses the coast's own crab and fish. It's intimate in the truest sense, perfect for two and not made for groups. Book three or four weeks ahead.
Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, seatings at 18:30 and 21:30. Website · Google Maps
The Albatroz, Cascais
The old summer palace of the Dukes of Loulé stands on the rocks above Praia da Rainha, right in the heart of Cascais. The Albatroz restaurant has white linen, wicker chairs and windows onto the bay, and its terrace bar hangs over the water. Ask for a window table, or the terrace in summer, and walk through the old town afterwards.
Hours: dinner 19:00–22:30, and lunch on the terrace 12:30–18:30. Website · Google Maps

Fresh fish and the sound of the sea
Furnas do Guincho, Guincho road
The terrace sits right above the rocks, with the sea in every window. Furnas do Guincho is known for fish baked in a salt crust and an octopus cataplana with sweet potato, and it's open every day. Ask for the terrace or a window facing west, and in late autumn book around 17:00 to catch the sunset with your first glass. It's one of the best places on the coast for a group, too.
Hours: every day, 12:30–00:00, kitchen until 22:00. Website · Google Maps
Porto Santa Maria, Guincho
Grilling fish by the sea at Guincho since 1947 and recommended by the Michelin Guide, Porto Santa Maria is a Cascais classic: bamboo-wrapped pillars, a sea-blue bar and big windows onto the Atlantic. Order the salt-baked fish to share, ask for a table by the window, and book a week or two ahead for a weekend.
Hours: every day, 12:00–16:00 and 19:15–23:30. Website · Google Maps

Restaurante Azenhas do Mar, Colares
Azenhas do Mar is the white village that tumbles down the cliff on the Sintra coast, and its restaurant is a glass-walled room on the rock right above the ocean pool. At dusk the lights come on along the cove and the whole place glows. Book a week or two ahead for a sunset table on the restaurant's website, and longer in summer.
Hours: every day, 12:00–22:30. Website · Google Maps

Restaurante da Adraga, Praia da Adraga
A little house on the sand between sea stacks and caves, where the same family has been cooking since 1905. The beach faces west, so the window tables look straight into the sunset, and the clams à Suzete are the dish to order. The restaurant takes a holiday break in December; book a window table a week or two ahead.
Hours: October to May, Wednesday to Sunday, 12:30–21:30. Website · Google Maps
Nortada, Praia Grande
At Praia Grande, Nortada has a south-facing terrace sheltered from the wind and a dining room with big windows onto the sea. Seafood is chosen from the tanks and sold by weight, and a long weekend lunch here after a morning on the beach is a lovely way to spend a honeymoon day.
Hours: Wednesday to Sunday, 12:00–22:00, and Monday lunch. Website · Google Maps
Barefoot at sunset
Bar do Guincho, Praia do Guincho
On the sand at the northern end of Guincho since 1987: a deck with white parasols, a pale blue wooden house, and a fireplace for the winter months. Order something simple, take off your shoes and watch the surfers come in. Hours change with the season, so call before you go to make sure they're open until sunset.
Hours: every day, 10:00–18:00 in winter and later in summer. Website · Google Maps
Moinho Dom Quixote, Azóia
A few minutes from Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, an old windmill stands in a wild Mediterranean garden with a terrace looking over the Atlantic. Come for brunch in the morning or drinks at sunset, and for a bigger party, its garden hosts private events.
Hours: every day, 11:00–23:00. Website · Google Maps
Small, sweet and full of character
House of Wonders, Cascais old town
Behind a green door in the old town, House of Wonders is part gallery, part café, part garden: tiled walls, wrought-iron tables, plants everywhere and a long table under a lace canopy that sparkles with fairy lights at night. It's for a relaxed date rather than a formal dinner, and that's exactly its charm.
Hours: every day, 10:00–23:00. Website · Google Maps

Incomum by Luís Santos, Sintra
In Sintra's village, Incomum is the place I suggest when a couple wants a lovely dinner without a tasting menu. The room is elegant and calm, and the cooking is generous: cod ceviche with passion fruit, beef cheek risotto, farófias with pistachio. Main courses are around €20.
Hours: every day except Wednesday, 12:00–24:00. Website · Google Maps
Café Saudade, Sintra
A few steps away, Café Saudade is a vintage house full of carved sofas, armchairs and painted roosters, and the sweetest place in Sintra for coffee and cake between the palaces. Keep it for the afternoon: it's a café, not a dinner spot.
Hours: Thursday to Monday, 08:00–18:00. Website · Google Maps
For a welcome dinner with friends and family
When your guests fly in for the wedding, the night before is when everyone meets, and these places make it feel like a celebration of its own. Write to them as soon as you have a date, because their event rooms and terraces book early.
Fortaleza do Guincho hosts group dinners from 25 to 100 guests in its skylit stone hall, with the sea just outside. The Valverde Palácio de Seteais has a banquet salon for a bigger party and a wine room for a smaller one, where you can taste the Colares wines of the Sintra coast. Furnas do Guincho has the largest terrace on the Guincho road, Moinho Dom Quixote can give you its whole garden, and The Albatroz has a private room by the bay.

A few things I tell every couple
Guincho is windy on most days, so bring a jacket or a shawl even in summer, and choose a sheltered terrace like Nortada's on the wildest evenings. Sunset is around 21:00 in June, around 17:30 in November after the clocks change, and just after 17:00 in December. In winter, the sea view belongs to lunch or to an aperitif before dinner, and a long lunch at Adraga or Azenhas do Mar is one of the most beautiful things you can do on this coast.
Beach restaurants shorten their hours in the colder months, so call before you drive out. Sintra's lanes are narrow and parking is hard, so a taxi or a driver makes the evening much easier, especially if you're coming straight from photos.
If you'll be in the city for a few days too, here are my favourite romantic restaurants in Lisbon, and for the places to take photos along this coast, my guides to Sintra elopements, Praia da Ursa and the most romantic beaches near Lisbon. And for where to stay, here are the hotels I love in Cascais and Sintra and in the Algarve.
Before dinner, the photos
This coast is my home, and it's where I love to photograph couples most. We meet a couple of hours before sunset, on the Guincho dunes, the cliffs above Ursa or in the gardens of Seteais, and when the light is gone you're ten minutes from your table and I head home with your photos. A proposal works the same way: one of you asks, I'm hiding nearby, we take the photos while everything is still trembling, and dinner is already waiting.

Sessions begin at €600 for two hours, and there's no travel fee anywhere around Cascais and Sintra. Have a look at my engagement and proposal sessions, or write to me with your date and the restaurant you've booked, and I'll plan the light around your table.
