Where to Stay in Lisbon: Romantic Luxury Hotels for a Honeymoon, an Elopement or a Wedding
The hotels I recommend in Lisbon for a honeymoon, a proposal, an elopement or a wedding: palaces with gardens, small hotels above Alfama, rooftop pools and the grand classics, with the room to ask for in each.
When a couple writes to me about a proposal, an elopement or a honeymoon session in Lisbon, the second question comes right after "are you free on our date?". It's almost always "and where should we stay?"
It matters more than it seems. For me, the story of the day often begins in your room: the dress hanging in a tall window, the morning light on the floor, the first glass of champagne while someone does your hair. A room with big windows and a balcony over the rooftops gives me half of the getting-ready photos before I've even unpacked my camera. And after a long day, it's where you come back to, a little tired and very happy.
So this is the list I send couples. Palaces with gardens, small hotels high above Alfama, rooftop pools with the whole city below, and the grand classics, for a honeymoon, a proposal, an elopement or a wedding with everyone you love.
All the hotels in this guide are on my Google map of romantic hotels, with their addresses and websites. Open it on your phone and save it before you go.

Palaces with gardens
Pestana Palace, Alcântara
A nineteenth-century palace built for the Marquis of Valle Flôr, now a National Monument, with a private chapel, gilded salons and French gardens that run down towards the river and the 25 de Abril Bridge. I've photographed weddings here, and I still slow down every time I walk through the stained-glass hall. The palace has four Royal Suites on its second floor, the family's old private rooms, with painted ceilings, canopy beds and terraces over the gardens or the Tagus. The hotel is large and most rooms are in the newer wings, so if romance is the point, ask for a room in the palace itself. Belém is ten minutes away.

Olissippo Lapa Palace, Lapa
A pink palace built for the Count of Valenças in Lapa, the quietest and most elegant corner of the city, with subtropical gardens, a pool among the palms and the river beyond. The room to ask for is the Tower Room, with two balconies, one of them in the old turret: the hotel calls it the best view in Lisbon, and it's hard to argue. The rooms in the Palace Wing keep their period furniture. For a small dinner, there's the Columbano Room, an old salon with a painted ceiling for about forty guests.

Palácio Príncipe Real, Príncipe Real
A pink family palace with only about twenty-five rooms and a garden that feels like a secret: palms, a jacaranda that turns purple in late May and June, and a heated pool that glows at night. Some rooms have roll-top baths in yellow, copper or red, others blue-and-white tiled walls and a fireplace, and the garden rooms open onto their own veranda. Dinner at EVOO can be a candlelit table on the terrace under the stars. It doesn't host weddings, but for a honeymoon or a proposal it's one of my favourite places in the city.

Torel Palace, Torel hill
Three old palaces on a hill next to the little Torel garden, with the rooftops of Baixa and the river spread out below. The rooms are named after Portuguese kings and queens, there's a pool at the top of the hill and a round one in the garden, and a Sunset Deck made for a toast at golden hour. 2Monkeys, its counter of tasting menus, has a Michelin star. For an intimate celebration, the hotel sets a single table for up to twenty, a glass pavilion over the city for forty, and a sunset reception by the pool for up to eighty.

Rooftops and the river
Verride Palácio Santa Catarina, Santa Catarina
An eighteenth-century palace with only eighteen rooms, a few steps from the Santa Catarina viewpoint, and a rooftop pool and terrace that look over the whole old town and the Tagus. Ask for the Salavisa Suite, with a balcony over the little square and the river, or one of the top-floor suites. The Winter Garden can be closed for a private dinner or a small ceremony for twenty, and the hotel's Blue Garden outside takes up to a hundred and twenty for sunset drinks. Cars can't drive into these streets, so your taxi will stop about two hundred metres away.

Bairro Alto Hotel, Chiado
On the square between Chiado and Bairro Alto, in an eighteenth-century building that the Pritzker-winning architect Eduardo Souto de Moura rebuilt and extended. Its fifth-floor terrace has the best sunset drink in the old centre, over the red roofs all the way to the river. The suite to ask for is the corner Tejo Suite, or the Alecrim Signature Suite with its balcony at the top of the new wing. Fado, the trams and the miradouros are all on your doorstep, and the square is lively, so ask for a room on the quiet side.

Santiago de Alfama, Alfama
A small hotel in an old palace in the lanes of Alfama, just below the castle. The Santiago Suite has a freestanding bath in the bedroom and a view over the rooftops of Alfama to the river, and I can't think of a more beautiful room in Lisbon to get ready in. The Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol viewpoints are five minutes away on foot, so we can walk straight out for a sunrise session while the lanes are still empty. The streets are steep and cobbled: arrive by taxi and leave the big suitcase light.

memmo Alfama, Alfama
A small design hotel hidden in Alfama with an infinity pool on its roof terrace, right above the old red roofs, the church domes and the river. The terrace and wine bar are lovely at sunset and the rooftop is for guests over sixteen, so it stays calm. Ask for a Terrace Room with your own private terrace and the same view.

memmo Príncipe Real, Príncipe Real
Its sister hotel hides behind a discreet archway above Príncipe Real, with a rooftop pool over Lisbon's hills that glows at blue hour. Some rooms have a balcony with an outdoor fireplace, made for a winter honeymoon evening above the city lights. The São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint and the Príncipe Real garden are a short walk away.

Grand and glamorous
Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon, Eduardo VII Park
Lisbon's great 1950s hotel stands beside Eduardo VII Park, filled with one of the largest private collections of mid-century Portuguese art. Many rooms have private terraces over the park, the spa has an indoor pool looking onto the gardens, and CURA, its restaurant, has a Michelin star. For a wedding, there's a ballroom with chandeliers and tapestries, and a terrace over the park for an intimate ceremony. It's not small and it's not hidden, but nobody in Lisbon does service quite like this.
Address: Rua Rodrigo da Fonseca 88, Lisbon. Website · Google Maps
The Ivens, Chiado
A nineteenth-century corner building in Chiado dressed like an explorer's house: tropical wallpaper, velvet armchairs and a dark wooden library with a tiled fireplace. Some rooms have balconies with a view of the river. It's more of a stylish city hotel than a romantic hideaway, and that's exactly why some couples love it: you step out of the door and the whole of Chiado is yours.
Address: Rua Capelo 5, Lisbon. Website · Google Maps
Valverde Lisboa, Avenida da Liberdade
A small townhouse hotel on Lisbon's grand avenue, with antiques, art and deep colours, and a green patio garden behind the restaurant where you can have champagne in the afternoon. The Valverde Suite on the sixth floor looks over the rooftops to the castle. The rooms are dark and moody, beautiful for an evening, so for getting ready I'd ask for one with big windows.

For a wedding with all your guests
If you'd like everyone you love in one place, three of these hotels host whole weddings. Pestana Palace has its own chapel, gilded salons and the gardens for dinner under the trees. My Pestana Palace wedding guide has its spaces, its light and real costs. The Olissippo Lapa Palace sets long tables on the lawn by the pool, and the Four Seasons has its ballroom and the terrace over the park.
For something smaller, Torel Palace and Verride Palácio Santa Catarina are perfect: a ceremony for a handful of people, a dinner for twenty to forty, and drinks at sunset above the city. The tiny hotels in Alfama and Príncipe Real don't do weddings, but they're the ones I'd choose for the nights before and after an elopement.

What I look for in a room
I've spent a lot of mornings in hotel rooms with brides, and the rooms that photograph beautifully all have the same things: big windows, soft daylight, a little space to move, and a balcony or a view if you're lucky. Dark designer rooms are gorgeous to sleep in, but light is everything for getting ready. If you can, book a suite for the morning of your elopement or your wedding, ask for late check-out, and tell the hotel a photographer is coming, so the room is ready and nobody's surprised.
Location matters too. From Alfama we can walk to Santa Luzia for sunrise, from Príncipe Real to São Pedro de Alcântara, and from Pestana Palace it's ten minutes to Belém. A good hotel is the one that puts you close to the light.
A few things I tell every couple
Lisbon is a city of hills, cobbles and stairs. In Alfama and Santa Catarina, taxis stop a short walk from the door, so pack light and wear flat shoes for the last stretch. Book the suite you want as soon as you have your dates, because the small hotels have only a few rooms with a view. The light is softest in the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset; in summer the sun sets around 21:00, and my best time to get married in Portugal guide has the rest of the year.
And when you've found your hotel, here are my favourite romantic restaurants in Lisbon and my three-day honeymoon in Lisbon. If you'll spend a few days by the ocean too, I've written about the hotels of Cascais and Sintra and the Algarve.
Your story starts in your room
This is how I love to photograph a day in Lisbon: we begin in your room, with the dress in the window and the city waking up outside, then walk out together to the viewpoints and the lanes while the light is soft and golden. A proposal works the same way: you choose the hotel terrace or the miradouro, I hide nearby, and we take the photos while everything is still trembling.

Proposal and couple sessions begin at €600 for two hours, elopement collections at €1,200 and weddings at €2,900, with no travel fee anywhere in Lisbon. Have a look at my proposal sessions, elopements and weddings, or write to me with your dates and the hotel you love, and I'll plan the light around it.
