A Surprise Proposal at Seteais Palace: How to Keep It Secret
How to keep a proposal at the Seteais Palace in Sintra secret until the knee goes down, from one I photographed there: the cover story, what to ask the hotel, the afternoon light in the gardens and Guincho at sunset.
When Miles proposed to Blair on the lawn of the Seteais Palace in Sintra, she thought they had simply run into two photographers from the wedding the day before. I photographed it as part of Marina Muravnik's team. Her eyes went wide, her hand went to her chest, and then he was down on one knee among the fallen leaves. Afterwards I drove them down to Guincho for an hour in the wind, and you can see their whole afternoon here.
If you're planning your own, this is what matters most: give the camera a reason to be there, ask the hotel about its gardens first, ask the question in the afternoon while the sun is still on the lawn, and keep Guincho for the last hour before sunset.

The moment she understood, and the ring
How do you keep a proposal at Seteais a secret?
With a cover story that explains the camera. Miles had asked Marina to help him plan it, and the plan was a chance meeting: we would be finishing a photoshoot in the gardens of the hotel where the two of them were staying, and they would walk into us by accident. We greeted them as familiar faces from the wedding, Miles asked if we could snap a few photos of them, and within minutes he turned to face her. Blair had no idea.
Three things made it work, and you can borrow them:
- The camera had a reason to be there. In a palace hotel's garden, two photographers look like they're finishing a shoot.
- His request for a few photos let us start shooting before he knelt, so we were in place when he went down.
- The spot was open lawn, with trees behind them and the sun coming through. Choose yours in advance with your photographer.
Without a wedding the day before, a couple's photoshoot booked for the trip is the simplest cover. If your partner would see through that, I stay out of sight until the question. Both ways are in my guide to where to propose near Lisbon and how to keep it secret.
Can you take photos in the Seteais gardens?
Ask the hotel first. The palace is a hotel today, Valverde Sintra Palácio de Seteais, with 30 rooms, and the gardens are the hotel's to manage: its exclusive-use wedding package includes "all rooms, gardens and facilities of the palace". Before you plan, write and ask whether a session in the gardens needs the hotel's permission, whether there's a fee, and whether either changes if you aren't staying there. Miles and Blair were guests, which kept it simple.
Seteais isn't one of the Parques de Sintra monuments, so the €150 photo-session fee you'd pay at Monserrate doesn't apply here.
Where in the gardens, and in what light?
On the lawn below the long white façade, on the grass steps between clipped hedges and along the paths under tall trees, with fallen leaves everywhere. On the open lawn the sun was full and warm; under the trees it came through the leaves in patches, softer on faces. I plan Seteais for the afternoon, because mornings in the Sintra hills are often misty, and the mist usually lifts by lunch.
The palace was built in 1787. In 1790 it passed to the Marquis of Marialva, who doubled it and joined the two wings with a triumphal arch, and it has been a hotel since 1955. Hiding in these gardens even has a precedent: one of the stories behind the name Seteais says the Marquis hid seven servants in the labyrinth of the gardens, so that one shout of "ai" came back seven times.

How do you add Guincho after the yes?
Drive down to the ocean for the last of the sun. Guincho is about 25 minutes from Seteais by car. I drove Miles and Blair over in my Tesla, and we spent another hour there: on the rocks above the sea, barefoot at the water's edge, then along the boardwalk by the dunes in the last, low light.
Guincho is windy most days, and the outfits changed with it. In the gardens he wore a short-sleeved polo; by the water he had pulled on a dark knit sweater, and she a denim jacket over her dress. By the boardwalk, out of the worst of it, the sweater came off again. Bring a layer each, wear your hair down or simply styled, and keep a hair tie in your pocket. If wind would spoil the day for you, finish in the gardens instead.

What time should you plan the proposal?
The gardens in the afternoon, Guincho for the last hour before sunset. Trees take the sun off a garden earlier than off the open coast, and Guincho faces the ocean, so its light lasts until sunset. In mid-October, when the sun sets around 19:00, I'd plan it like this:
- 16:00, the question in the Seteais gardens, then portraits on the lawn, the steps and the paths
- 17:15, the drive to Guincho, about 25 minutes
- 17:45 to 19:00, the rocks and the water's edge, then the last light
In mid-June, move everything about two hours later, since the sun sets around 21:00 (sunset month by month). The clocks go back on the last Sunday of October (31 October in 2027), and sunset moves an hour earlier overnight.
Sintra is less than an hour from Lisbon by car, and you'll need a car between the two places; a car with a driver from a Lisbon company costs about €160–280 for four hours.
What if it's windy, or it rains?
The boardwalk by the Guincho dunes is calmer than the open sand. If the weather turns, we wait, move or pick another evening, and with a photoshoot as the cover, a new date needs no explanation.
Can you celebrate at Seteais afterwards?
Yes. The hotel offers a picnic at €145 per person, a private table for two inside the palace and its restaurant, the Marialva. If you finish at Guincho, Fortaleza do Guincho has its restaurant on the cliff.
Photographing your proposal
My three-hour session covers both places, the gardens and the beach, for €900, with 200+ edited photographs and travel in the Lisbon area included. You get a sneak peek within 10 days and the full gallery in 2 to 4 weeks. The details are on my engagement and proposal page.
Tell me your dates in Portugal and whether your partner expects a photoshoot or nothing at all. I'll reply with the hour I'd plan the question and how we'd keep it hidden.
