Cascais Wedding Photographer: Venues, Light and Logistics
Cascais from a photographer who lives there: five venues worth a look, when the light is softest month by month, the permits for a beach, and what a wedding collection includes.
I live in Cascais, so a wedding here is a wedding on my own coast: no travel fee, and I already know the wind at Guincho and the hour the sun drops into the Atlantic. Cascais sits about 30 to 35 km from Lisbon, according to Travel-Boo, so guests flying into Lisbon can stay by the sea and still be close to the city. Wedding collections begin at €2,900 for up to 10 hours, with travel included.
Which Cascais venues are worth a look?
Five places on this stretch of coast, and what each one is:
- Forte da Cruz, Estoril. A fort by the sea in Estoril that Time Out calls "already a classic, one of the most requested venues" in its guide to Cascais weddings. Popular venues fill first, so if it's your one place, confirm the date before anything else.
- Farol Hotel, Cascais. A five-star hotel on the rocks, whose Deck on the Rocks hosts wedding receptions right above the water.
- The Albatroz Hotel, Cascais. A boutique hotel that rises above the ocean, with a panoramic bar over the Bay of Cascais and the town on its doorstep.
- Fortaleza do Guincho. A hotel with a Michelin-starred restaurant, set on a cliff over the Atlantic and looking towards Cabo da Roca. Wild coast, big sky, and wind to plan for.
- Guincho and the Cresmina dunes. For a symbolic ceremony or portraits on the sand. Guincho is ten minutes from my home and windy on most days; the raised boardwalks along the Cresmina dunes are the sheltered plan B. My Guincho family session shows the light and the wind as they were, and Miles and Blair's surprise proposal at Guincho shows the beach at its gentlest.

Just past Cascais, in Sintra, the cliffs above Praia da Ursa are another favourite for vows. Read the Ursa path, tide and light guide before you choose it, because the walk down is long and steep.
When is the light best for a Cascais wedding?
The two sides of Cascais light differently. The beaches of Cascais and Estoril face south, towards the mouth of the Tagus, so at sunset the sun sits to the west along the coast rather than in front of you. At Guincho the coast faces west, and the sun goes down straight into the ocean.

These are Cascais sunsets on the 15th of each month in 2027, local time, with the start of the soft evening light:
- May: sunset 20:43, soft light from about 20:05
- June: sunset 21:05, soft light from about 20:25
- July: sunset 21:03, soft light from about 20:24
- August: sunset 20:33, soft light from about 19:56
- September: sunset 19:48, soft light from about 19:13
- October: sunset 19:01, soft light from about 18:25
In June and July the best light comes after 20:00, which often means slipping out between courses. In September and October a ceremony at 16:30 or 17:00 leaves time for family photographs and then the couple portraits as the light drops. The clocks go back on 31 October 2027, and sunset moves an hour earlier overnight. For the wider picture of the seasons, see the best time to get married in Portugal.
Can you marry on a Cascais beach or cliff?

A symbolic ceremony, yes, with permission. Photo and film sessions on Cascais public space need a municipal licence requested at least 5 working days ahead; on a beach or the seafront promenade you also need an authorisation from the Harbour Master (Capitania do Porto de Cascais), and inside the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, where Guincho lies, one from the nature conservation institute, ICNF, as the Câmara Municipal de Cascais explains. Ask early, so the paperwork never decides your date.
A legal wedding is a civil ceremony at the registry, or at a venue if the registrar agrees, and the fee rises from €120 to €200 for that. The steps by passport are in my guide on how to elope in Portugal. For most couples I suggest the legal part at home and the vows here, where the hour and the place are yours to choose.
