The Most Romantic Restaurants in Lisbon for a Date, a Proposal or a Wedding Dinner
The list I send couples after our session in Lisbon: Michelin dinners, river views, palace rooms and fado, for a date, a proposal, an elopement dinner, a honeymoon or a welcome dinner with friends.
Most of my couple sessions in Lisbon end the same way. The sun slips down towards the river, we take one last photo on a miradouro, and while I'm packing my camera they ask me, a little shy and a little hungry: "So where should we go for dinner tonight?" I always have an answer ready, because the evening isn't over when the photos are. Sometimes it's a proposal that needs a toast, sometimes the night after an elopement, the first dinner of a honeymoon, or the welcome dinner where both families finally sit at one table.
So this is my list, the one I send couples after our session. Some places are once-in-a-lifetime dinners with Michelin stars, some are small rooms where the chef brings your plate to the table himself, and a few are simply the best seats in the city for watching Lisbon turn gold. Every one of them is open and much loved by the people who eat there.
All the places in this guide are on my Google map of romantic restaurants, with their hours, websites and directions. Open it on your phone and save it before you go.

When the evening has to be unforgettable
For a proposal dinner, an anniversary, or the night you got married with only the two of you, this is where I'd book.
Belcanto, Chiado
José Avillez's two-star restaurant is the most famous table in Lisbon, and it earns it. The room has vaulted stone ceilings, tall steel-framed windows and soft banquettes where you can sit side by side, and the tasting menu walks you through Portugal one surprise at a time. For something truly your own, ask about the chef's table inside the kitchen. Book three to eight weeks ahead.
Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, lunch 12:30–15:00 and dinner 19:00–22:00. Website · Google Maps
Henrique Sá Pessoa, Amoreiras
Many of you will remember Alma in Chiado. The chef's two-star restaurant now carries his own name and has a new home in Amoreiras: about thirty seats, deep blue banquette nooks that feel made for two, and a small counter by the open kitchen. I love it for couples who want the food to be the main event without any stiffness around it. Ask for a nook when you book on the restaurant's website.
Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, dinner 18:30–23:00; lunch Thursday to Saturday, 12:00–15:00. Website · Google Maps

Fifty Seconds, Parque das Nações
A lift ride to the top of the Vasco da Gama Tower, and then ten tables in a round glass room 120 metres above the Tagus, with the long Vasco da Gama bridge running out across the water. Fifty Seconds earned its second Michelin star this year. Book the earliest seating and ask for a window table, so the sky changes colour while you eat. Reserve six weeks ahead or more, and check its winter closing dates before you plan around it.
Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, dinner 18:30–22:00; Saturday lunch from 12:30. Website · Google Maps

Epur, Chiado
Vincent Farges's one-star restaurant is calm, light and modern, and it has one of the most romantic corners in the city: a table framed by an oval cut in the wall, with azulejos beside you and the river beyond the window. Ask for it when you book, two or three weeks ahead. The tasting menus are around €150 and €185 a person, and Epur is closed on Sunday and Monday.
Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, dinner 19:30–21:30; Saturday lunch 12:30–14:00. Website · Google Maps
Feitoria, Belém
By the river in Belém, inside the Altis Belém hotel, Feitoria holds one Michelin star and the quiet kind of luxury: candlelight, dark wood and a seasonal tasting menu. It's the natural ending to a sunset session by the Belém Tower or the Jerónimos Monastery, both minutes away. Dinner is Tuesday to Saturday, and it's best to book directly.
Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, dinner from 19:00. Website · Google Maps
If your honeymoon has you at the Four Seasons Hotel Ritz, you don't even need to leave: CURA, the hotel's small one-star dining room, serves a Portuguese tasting menu by chef Rodolfo Lavrador, with a vegetarian version too.

Small rooms with a big heart
Not every romantic dinner needs a white tablecloth. In these two the food is extraordinary and the evening still feels warm and personal.
Grenache, Alfama
Tucked into a little square right under the castle walls, Grenache is French at heart and Portuguese in its produce, with one Michelin star. Inside there are lanterns, candles and a glimpse of the kitchen; in the warm months the tables move out onto the patio beneath the castle. The tasting menus are €135 and €165 a person.
Hours: Thursday to Monday, dinner 19:00–22:30. Website · Google Maps
SÁLA de João Sá, Baixa
Near the river, at the edge of Alfama, SÁLA feels like being invited into the chef's home. João Sá often brings the dishes out and tells you about them himself, and his tasting menus carry a gentle Asian accent. One Michelin star, warm light, and a room where nobody is in a hurry. Book on TheFork or by phone.

With Lisbon at your feet
Suba, Palácio Santa Catarina
Suba lives inside Verride, a palace hotel on the Santa Catarina hill. Its tasting menus, from €80 to €135, bring the north of Portugal to the table, and the hotel's rooftop, open all the way round over the city and the river, is one of the loveliest places in Lisbon for a glass of something before dinner. Ask whether the rooftop is open when you book.
Hours: Thursday to Monday, dinner 19:00–21:30. Website · Google Maps
BAHR and its terrace, Bairro Alto Hotel
The sixth-floor terrace of the Bairro Alto Hotel looks over the rooftops to the Tagus, and it's open to everyone, not only hotel guests. Come at golden hour, stay for dinner in BAHR's bright, colourful dining room, and you're a few steps from Chiado's streets for a walk afterwards.
Hours: every day, dinner 19:00–00:00, with lunch on weekdays and brunch at weekends. Website · Google Maps

Ponto Final, Almada
The simplest evening on this list, and maybe the dreamiest. Take the ferry from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas, about ten minutes across the river, walk along the quay, and sit at a table right on the water's edge with all of Lisbon and the 25 de Abril bridge in front of you. Grilled fish, a bottle of vinho verde, and the city turning pink across the water. Book a few weeks ahead for a sunset table.
Hours: every day except Tuesday, 12:30–16:00 and 19:00–23:00. Google Maps
Chapitô à Mesa, Castle hill
Just below São Jorge Castle, Chapitô has a terrace with a wide view over the Baixa and the river, and a calmer dining room upstairs. It's lively and unpretentious, with prices to match, so it suits a group of friends as happily as it suits two. Ask for the terrace at sunset, or upstairs for a quieter dinner.
Hours: every day, the terrace from 12:00 to 00:30 and the upstairs restaurant for dinner from 18:30. Website · Google Maps
Fado by candlelight
Casa de Linhares, Alfama
Nothing is more Lisbon than fado over dinner, and Casa de Linhares has it in a sixteenth-century palace with brick vaults and candlelight. The singers perform short sets between the courses, so you can still talk, and hold hands, in between. Book at least a week ahead and ask for a table near the singers. It works beautifully for a small group the night before a wedding, too.
Hours: Monday to Saturday, 20:00–00:00. Website · Google Maps
For a welcome dinner with friends and family
When everyone flies in for your wedding, the dinner before it often becomes the evening people remember most. These rooms hold a crowd and still feel special. Their private rooms go early, so write to them as soon as your date is set.
Palácio Chiado
An eighteenth-century palace in Chiado, with painted ceilings, a frescoed staircase and a bar that glows under the frescoes. Its private salons, available from Sunday to Thursday, make a wonderful setting for a welcome dinner. Come for the rooms, which are breathtaking.
Hours: every day, 12:30–15:00 and 18:30–00:00, until 02:00 Thursday to Saturday. Website · Google Maps
Valle Flôr, Pestana Palace
The restaurant of the Pestana Palace sits in the palace's former ballrooms, with painted ceilings, gilded mirrors, turquoise chairs and tall windows onto the garden. If you're marrying at the palace, it's the easiest elegant welcome dinner there is; if not, it's simply one of the most beautiful rooms in Lisbon to eat in. I've written more about the palace in my Pestana Palace wedding notes, and private dining is on the hotel's website.
Hours: lunch 12:30–15:00 and dinner 19:00–23:00. Website · Google Maps

Chapitô's terrace and Casa de Linhares are lovely for a group as well, and the Bairro Alto Hotel has smaller rooms for an intimate dinner with your closest people.
A few things I tell every couple
Book the starred restaurants first, three to six weeks ahead and longer for a Friday or Saturday in summer, and remember that many of them close on Sunday and Monday. When you book, tell them it's a proposal, a honeymoon or your wedding night: Lisbon's restaurants love a small surprise, and they'll give you the better table if they can.
For a view, book your table half an hour before sunset, which is around 21:00 in June, around 19:00 in early October and just after 17:00 in December. And Lisbon is hilly, with pavements of polished stone, so if you're coming straight from photos in a long dress and heels, take a taxi between the session and dinner.
If you're spending part of your trip by the sea, here are my favourite romantic restaurants in Cascais, Sintra and on the beaches, and for the days in between, my Lisbon honeymoon itinerary. And for where to stay, here are the hotels I love in Lisbon.
Before dinner, the photos
This is where I come in. Most of my couple sessions in Lisbon happen in the last hours of daylight. We wander through the lanes of Alfama, stop at a viewpoint, maybe walk down to the river, and when the light is gone you walk straight into dinner, glowing, while I head home with your photos. A proposal works the same way: one of you asks, we take the photos while everything is still trembling, and the table is already waiting.

Sessions begin at €600 for two hours. Have a look at my engagement and proposal sessions, or write to me with your date and the restaurant you've booked, and I'll plan the light around your table.
