Pestana Palace Lisbon Wedding: Spaces, Light and Cost
Pestana Palace in Lisbon, from a wedding I photographed there: how many guests each space takes, where the light falls hour by hour, the rain plan and what the hotel does and doesn't publish about cost.
I photographed a wedding of two brides at Pestana Palace, in the gardens, the palace salons and on a terrace facing the 25 de Abril Bridge. In the gardens the low sun came through the palms behind them, and from the terrace we looked over the palace roofs to the Tagus and the red bridge. You can marry in those gardens, dine in the palace's former ballrooms and walk upstairs to bed, and this is how I'd plan your day there around the light.
Pestana Palace is a five-star hotel built around the Palácio de Valle Flôr, a palace commissioned in 1890 in Alto de Santo Amaro, Lisbon. The palace and its French-style gardens are a National Monument; Pestana bought the estate in 1991 and opened the hotel in May 2001. It stands at Rua Jau 54, about 20 minutes from the airport, 2 km from the Belém monuments and 30 km from Cascais along the coast road. The hotel lists 32 event spaces for up to 500 guests, and 194 rooms and suites. It doesn't publish wedding prices: it quotes for your date and guest count.
A June day at Pestana Palace, space by space
These times are for mid-June, when the sun sets around 21:00 (15 June 2027). Golden hour is roughly the last hour before sunset, so in June it falls in the evening, not the afternoon.
Getting ready in the palace salons, 14:00
The salons have painted ceilings, gilded frames, chandeliers and tall glazed doors. The light through those doors is soft and even at almost any hour, which makes them the place to be at 14:00 in June or July, when the gardens are at their harshest. If you get ready in a suite, book it from the night before: check-in is from 15:00. The hotel's four Royal Suites, on the palace's second floor, have their own terraces, with views over the Tagus.

First look and family photos in the garden shade, 16:30
At 16:30 in June the sun is still high and the trees shade the gardens. It's the hour for a first look, if you want one, and the family photos before an 18:00 ceremony. My first look guide explains what a first look changes in the rest of the day.
The ceremony in the gardens, 18:00
The hotel has three garden spaces for a ceremony. The French garden takes up to 80 guests standing, the Ajuda garden 320 standing or 180 at tables. The garden by the old stables, in front of the palace, takes 400 standing or 180 at tables and looks over the city and the river. In July a 16:00 ceremony puts full sun on your guests' faces; 18:00 is kinder to everyone, and to the photographs. A symbolic ceremony can also be held in a salon; for a civil one, a registrar comes to the hotel (see the FAQ).
Drinks in the gardens, then portraits at 19:30
The big group photo comes first, while everyone is still together. Then the two of you slip away. In the gardens the palms and the palace hide the lowest sun a little before the official sunset, so I take couples out 60 to 90 minutes before it: around 19:30 in June. The sun then comes through the palms behind you, over the calçada paths, the clipped hedges and the pavilion with the terracotta roof.

Dinner in Valle Flôr or Belém, 20:00
The palace's former ballrooms are the Valle Flôr restaurant. For a wedding the hotel lists them for exclusive use: 200 at round tables or 320 for a reception, with daylight and access to the garden and a terrace. Belém, the largest room, seats 320 at round tables, but the hotel's list doesn't mark it as having daylight, so see it on your visit. Whichever room you choose, ask for it to be fully set 30 minutes before guests walk in. That's my window, after the portraits, to photograph the tables untouched while daylight still comes through the windows.
The bridge terrace before sunset, 20:30
Between courses, the two of you step out for 20 minutes. From the terraces at the top of the palace you look over its roofs to the Tagus and the red 25 de Abril Bridge, the most Lisbon frame on the property. Terraces aren't always open to wedding guests, so ask the events team early which one you can use. Then it's back inside for speeches, cake and the first dance at about 21:15.

That June day runs a little over seven hours, from 14:00 to the first dance, and nobody needs a car: getting ready, the ceremony, dinner and bed are on one property. If you want the party covered too, see how many hours of photography to book.
When is golden hour at Pestana Palace?
Later than most couples expect: in summer the sun sets around 21:00. In mid-September it sets around 19:45 and in mid-October around 19:00 (sunset month by month).
In mid-September golden hour falls in the drinks hour after an 18:00 ceremony, so you don't need to leave dinner at all. By mid-October it would fall during that ceremony, so start it around 16:30 instead. The clocks go back on the last Sunday of October (31 October in 2027), and sunset moves an hour earlier overnight, so a wedding from that Sunday on needs its whole day an hour earlier. For rain and heat by month, see the best time to get married in Portugal.
Send me your date through the inquiry form and I'll send back the sunset time at Pestana that day, with a timeline built on it.
What happens if it rains?
You change rooms, not plans. Several indoor rooms on the hotel's list open onto the gardens, Valle Flôr, Ajuda and Lusitano II among them. Ask which one is held as the backup for your garden ceremony, see it on your site visit, and agree by what time on the day you'll decide. Portraits move into the salons, and the terrace frame waits for a break in the clouds.
How much does a Pestana Palace wedding cost?
Pestana doesn't publish wedding prices, and I won't guess one. What I can give you are the costs around it:
- Guest rooms: from about €200 a night for a Classic Room booked direct, and rates change daily. Group bookings for your guests normally start at 10 rooms, with minimum stays, payments and cancellation terms set by the hotel.
- Getting around: airport transfers on request at extra cost, paid parking for guests, and a free shuttle to the city center.
- Civil ceremony: €200 in total to the registry for a wedding outside its office or at a weekend, plus the registrar's transport.
- My collections: weddings from €2,900 for a full day of up to 10 hours, with travel in Lisbon included.
When you ask Pestana for a quote, ask for the price per guest and what it includes (drinks, cake, the ceremony set-up). Ask about any minimum number of guests or minimum spend for your room, whether VAT is included, and until what time the room, the gardens and the music are yours.
FAQ
Is Pestana Palace right for our wedding?
It suits a city wedding where guests sleep where they celebrate, with a room for any weather. It suits you less if you want a venue to yourselves: its restaurants are open to the public, and the hotel advertises summer DJ nights at Casa do Lago, the garden restaurant, every Friday and Saturday. Ask what else is on in the gardens on your date, and which spaces can be exclusive, as Valle Flôr can. For vineyards less than an hour from the city, see this wedding at Quinta de Sant'Ana.
How many guests can Pestana Palace host?
Up to 500 guests across 32 event spaces, by the hotel's count. For a small wedding, Casa do Lago by the garden lake seats 30 at round tables, and the Luís XV and Luís XVI rooms hold 60 standing each.
Can we have a legal ceremony at Pestana Palace?
Yes, if a registrar agrees: the date, time and place are set with the registrar in advance, and the fee is the €200 above, plus transport. Americans first sign a statement in person at the US Embassy in Lisbon, before the registry file opens. Same-sex couples have been able to marry in Portugal since 2010. For most couples I suggest the legal part at home and a symbolic ceremony here, which is far simpler; the steps for both are in my planning timeline.
When should we book?
The venue first, 12 to 18 months or more ahead for a June or September date, then the photographer 8 to 12 months ahead. Pestana publishes no lead time, so ask the events team which dates are still open in your year.
Send me your date and guest count through the inquiry form, and tell me whether you're marrying legally in Portugal or symbolically. I'll reply with the light for your hour and a first timeline, and you can see what each collection includes.
