Destination Wedding Photographer: Portugal vs France — Cost, Light and What Changes

Moving a destination wedding from Provence to Lisbon? What a photographer costs in each country, where the real savings are, the legal difference, the light, and what you give up.

Portugal & France·Planning Guide

A destination wedding photographer in Portugal usually costs less than one in Provence or on the Riviera, and about the same as one in the Dordogne or south-west France. The bigger differences lie elsewhere: what the venue and the dinner cost, whether you can marry legally on the trip, and how far your photographer has to travel. I'm Yana Yart, a wedding photographer based in Cascais, near Lisbon. I photograph across Portugal and have worked in France too, so this is how the two compare from where I stand.

How much does a wedding photographer cost in Portugal vs France?

The published ranges, side by side:

  • Tov Studio Photo, destination weddings, 2026: Portugal €2,800–€5,500, France €4,500–€8,500.
  • French Wedding Style, France by region, 2026: Provence €6,000–€12,000+, the Riviera €3,000–€10,000+, the Dordogne €2,500–€5,000, south-west France €2,000–€4,500.
  • Fearless Photographers, average for a regular wedding, 2023: Portugal about €1,750, France about €1,900.
  • My collections: from €2,900 in Portugal for up to 10 hours, travel included around Lisbon; from €3,800 in France, the same day plus travel from €900, flights and stay included.

Read the ranges by region. If you were planning Provence or the Côte d'Azur, a photographer here costs noticeably less. If you were looking at the Dordogne or the south-west, the fees overlap, and the directory averages put the two countries within about €150 of each other. So choose Portugal for the place and the paperwork, not only for a cheaper photographer.

Where the money really moves: venue, dinner and travel

French Wedding Style puts an 80-guest wedding at a mid-range château at €83,000 to €144,000 in Provence, €50,000 to €100,000 in Bordeaux and €35,000 to €75,000 in the Dordogne, with catering at €250 to €450 a head in Provence against €130 to €220 in the value regions. For Portugal, I priced a 40- and an 80-guest wedding near Lisbon from published supplier prices in my 2027 planning timeline: a Sintra venue's 2027 menu, with the space, service, bar and cake, starts at €83 a guest.

Travel is the other line. A photographer who lives near your venue adds none, and Tov Studio Photo puts the uplift for a flown-in photographer at 25 to 60 percent over home-country rates. My own terms are simple: Lisbon and about 1.5 hours around it are always included, elsewhere in Portugal travel starts at €400 and covers the standard two nights, and across Europe it starts at €900, flights and stay included.

Can you get legally married on the trip?

This is the difference couples feel most. In France you marry at the town hall of a town where one of you, or a parent, has a home or a residence, so couples who live abroad usually marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in France. I explain the French rules in my Chamonix elopement guide.

Portugal marries couples who don't live here. A civil wedding takes about a month of paperwork, and the registry fee is €120, or €200 at a weekend or away from the registry office. The documents by passport are in how to elope in Portugal. I still suggest the symbolic route to most couples, because it frees the hour and the place: a symbolic ceremony can begin as the sun drops over the cliffs, while a civil one waits for the registrar.

Does Portugal have better light than Provence?

Not by the clock. These are sunsets on the 15th of the month in 2027, local time, with the start of the soft evening light:

  • May: Cascais and Sintra 20:43, soft light from about 20:05; Aix-en-Provence 20:56, from about 20:15.
  • June: Cascais and Sintra 21:05, from about 20:25; Aix-en-Provence 21:21, from about 20:37.
  • September: Cascais and Sintra 19:48, from about 19:13; Aix-en-Provence 19:49, from about 19:11.
  • October: Cascais and Sintra 19:01, from about 18:25; Aix-en-Provence 18:56, from about 18:17.

In summer Provence keeps the sun about a quarter of an hour longer; by autumn the two are within minutes. What changes is what the light falls on. At Guincho and on the Sintra cliffs the sun goes down straight into the Atlantic, and the coast brings its own weather: wind on most days at Guincho, and fog at Praia da Adraga in spring and autumn. I plan the ceremony time back from sunset in either country, so the portraits land in that last soft hour.

Venues: châteaux, palaces and quintas

French destination weddings tend to centre on a château and its grounds. Around Lisbon the choice sits closer together: palaces in Lisbon and Sintra, quintas and vineyards to the north, and hotels on the coast at Cascais. I've photographed a wedding at Pestana Palace in Lisbon, a multicultural wedding at Quinta do Gradil, a vineyard wedding at Quinta de Sant'Ana and a bridal editorial at Monserrate in Sintra, all within about an hour of Lisbon.

What you gain, and what you give up

What you gain by moving the wedding to Portugal:

  • the option of a legal wedding on the trip itself
  • lower venue and dinner prices than Provence, on the published figures above
  • a photographer who already knows the venue's light, with no travel to pay for near Lisbon

What you give up:

  • a particular château, region or family tie to France
  • if you were planning the Dordogne or the south-west, a big drop in the photographer's fee

If you keep France

I travel. A wedding day in France with me starts at €3,800: the €2,900 collection plus travel from €900, flights and stay included. I've photographed a winter bridal editorial in Chamonix, and the planning works the same way wherever we are: video calls, a timeline built on sunset, and a sneak peek within 10 days.

Is a wedding photographer cheaper in Portugal than in France?

Cheaper than in Provence and on the Riviera, on every published range above. Against the Dordogne and south-west France the fees overlap, so compare what each quote includes, travel too.

Can foreigners get legally married in France?

Only in a town where one of you, or a parent, has a home or a residence. That is why most couples who live abroad hold a symbolic ceremony in France. Portugal marries couples who don't live here.

Do you photograph weddings in France?

Yes. Travel within Europe starts at €900, with flights and stay included, on top of the collection.

When you have a date and a place, in either country, send them to me and I'll tell you what the light does at your hour.
